Nerds, Geeks, Dorks and Tortoise Soup

I must be...

Pure Nerd
65 % Nerd, 43% Geek, 39% Dork
For The Record:A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd. The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful. Congratulations!

I was looking at a blog and found this link. Not known for my brilliance, I followd the link, much as Alice would follow a hare. This test is what I found. So, are you a Dork? A Nerd? Or a Geek? Find out for yourself. It only took about 10 minutes, maybe less. Apparently, the test giver is not pectacular with math, though, because if you add 65%, 43%, and 39% you come up with 147%. Oh, well, it is still fun.

I also found this article, thanks to someone's BLOG, about how old whles can live to. Apparently, last year in Alaska, some natives killed a bowhead whale, as they are allowed by law, and found a harpoon point embedded in it that is about 100 years old! Experts suggest that the whale may have been 130 years old. Now, I ask you this: If you have the resources that allow you to live comfortably WITHOUT hunting a mammal that can live to 130 years old, should you anyway? How many of us would say, "Yeah, let's have some Gallopagos Tortoise Soup! The Spanish explorers liked it, and I am part Spanish; it's in my culture." or how about this: "My ancestors were cannibals, and Old Aunty Betty is about to celebrate her 90th birthday...she sure looks tasty!" (Hmmm, Grandma, aren't you closing in on 80?) I just fail to see how whale meat compares to something like beef? Or perhaps chicken? Or Seal. OK, I bet that baby seals probably are MUCH more tender than century old whale!

There are things in our culture that we should let go of when time and circumstances allow. I don't herd sheep, my grand dad did. I am not a carpenter, my dad is. I don't eat liver, though it was apparently some sort of horrid tradition in my dad's family. We don't send people with physical or mental disabilities to assylums anymore...you know why? Because a disability does not make you less human. One hundred years ago, though, that may not have been true. Should we start taking people with disabilities and sending them to homes where they have no interaction with families or friends because that was in our culture? Also, at one time, it was considered blasphemy, ok, let's say abnormal, that females might actually enjoy intimate relations. Does that mean we should publicly humiliate any woman that seems to enjoy relations with the opposite sex? Or worse, mutilate them so they cannot? I just fail to see good justification for continued harvest of whales. Honestly! Go eat a frickin' salmon!

So, I was sitting here last night watching Beach Volleyball and the phone rang. It was my dad. He was in the area...apparently he had just finished placing a series of geocaches for me...I have created a monster. Well, at least I know something I am going to have to do today appart from my continued coverage of women's beach volleyball. GO USA!!

I agree about the whales, do they really need them to suvive? I don't see any one fighting for the return of syphilis since that was also a part of culture. I don't think anyone is turning down penicillin.
Ok enough soap box.
I look forward to finding the new Geocache with you today.

My test result was Joe Normal.
I was 43% Nerd, 4% geek and 20%dork and that doesn't add up to 100% either.
